Door 10: Sally the squirrel

AdventMysteryCal

Sally is a sweet little forager, who’s fairly quick to make.

10AdventAmigurumi_SallytheSquirrel

Today you will need brick red, or chestnut, as well as a tiny bit of dark brown and black yarn.

Don’t forget your 2mm hook, fibrefill, a tapestry needle and scissors, and, if you battle finding the end of the round, a stitch marker. If you don’t have a stitch marker you can use a paper clip or safety-pin instead.

All the CAL tutorials  are written in US terminology, if you need to convert to UK terminology please look at my Stitch Index.

Today’s abbreviations are:
ch – chain
dec – decrease
hdc – half double crochet
inc – increase
sc – single crochet
slst – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)

It is advisable to read the directions before starting, just so you have an overview of what’s happening.

Begin by making a magic ring with brick red/chestnut yarn.
Round 1
5 sc into the magic ring, pull ring closed (5 sts).
Round 2
Inc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 3
1 sc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 4
1 sc in each st around (10 sts).
At this point you want to stuff the head quite firmly.
Use the back of your crochet hook, or a pencil to pack the stuffing in tightly.
Round 5
Dec x 5 (5 sts).
Round 6
Inc in each st around (10 sts).
1 sc in the next three sts, (ch5, slst down the back bumps of the chain starting at second ch from hook), 1 st in the next two sts, (ch5, slst down the back bumps of the chain starting at second ch from hook), 1 sc in the next five sts (10 sts).
Round 7
1 sc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 8
1 sc in each st around (10sts).
Round 9
1 sc in the next st, hdc-inc in the next two sts, 1 sc in the next three sts, hdc-inc in the next two sts, 1 sc in the next three sts (14 sts).
Round 10
1 sc in each st around (14 sts).
Round 11
1 sc in the next st, hdc-dec x 2, 1 sc in the next three sts, hdc-dec x 2, 1 sc in the next three sts (10 sts).
At this point you want to stuff the body quite firmly.
Use the back of your crochet hook, or a pencil to pack the stuffing in tightly.
Round 12
Dec x 5 (5 sts).
Cut the yarn with a long tail and close the head using the closing method I explained in the Amigurumi basics series.

To make the ears:
Ch 3 using light grey yarn. Make 2.
Cut the yarn with a long tail. Fold the chain over and thread both yarn ends onto a needle.
Attach the ears on either side of the head one row down from the magic ring.

To make the nut:
Cut a length of dark brown yarn and make a large knot in the centre of the yarn. Thread the yarn onto your needle and insert the needle through one of the loops of yarn at the top of the paw. Insert the needle into the lower part of the head and weave the tail end into the body. Do this on the back, since the tail will cover that part.
Repeat with the other yarn end on the other paw.

To make the feet:
Make four of the following in brick red/chestnut yarn.
Ch 4, 1 sc into each chain starting with the second ch from the hook, using the back bumps of the chain (3 sts).
Sew the feet together as follows.
Step 1
Thread one of the tail ends, attached to the last stitch made, onto a tapestry needle.
Step 2
Hold two of the pieces with right sides facing out (the right side is the one where the stitches look like ‘v’s).
Step 3
Using whip stitch insert the needle into the first available stitch of the piece not attached to the needle.
Step 4
Insert the needle through the first stitch of the piece attached to the needle.
Repeat Step 3 and 4 until the foot is sewn up.
Repeat with for the second foot.
Cut the yarn leaving a long length to attach the feet to the body in line with the hdc stitches and facing to the front of the body.

To make the tail:

Make a magic ring with brick red/chestnut yarn.
Round 1
5 sc into the magic ring, pull ring closed (5 sts).
Round 2
1 sc in each st around (5 sts).
Round 3
Inc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 4
1 sc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 5
1 sc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 6
1 sc in each st around (10 sts).
Round 7
Dec x 1, 1 sc in next eight sts (9 sts).
Round 8
Dec x 1, 1 sc in next seven sts (8 sts).
Round 9
Dec x 1, 1 sc in next six sts (7 sts).
Round 10
Dec x 1, 1 sc in next five sts (6 sts).
Round 11
Dec x 1, 1 sc in next four sts (5 sts).
Cut the yarn with enough length to sew the tail to the body.

To attach the yarn to the body:

Thread the yarn end onto the needle and whip stitch the tail to the bottom on the squirrel’s back.
Insert the needle into the body and exit it about halfway up the back.
Insert the needle through the adjacent stitch on the tail and exit through the stitch directly next to it.
Reinsert the needle back into the same stitch on the back and exit again.
Make sure you pull the yarn really tight, so that the tail sits flush against the body.
Once more insert the needle into the tail but this time exit on the other side of the tail, weave the yarn end through the stitch you exited next to and reinsert through the tail and then back into the body.
Again pull the yarn really tight and weave the end into the body.
You may need to tug on the tail  a bit to create the ‘S’ shape.

Well done, you’ve just created your very own Sally the squirrel.

Please share her on Instagram with #adventmysterycal2015 so that I can see your creation.

I’ll see you again tomorrow for Door 11.
