Matt and Milly are pretty attached to each other.
Aren’t they adorable?

Today you will need light grey and dark brown yarn.

Don’t forget your 2mm hook, fibrefill, a tapestry needle and scissors, and, if you battle finding the end of the round, a stitch marker. If you don’t have a stitch marker you can use a paper clip or safety-pin instead.

All the CAL tutorials  are written in US terminology, if you need to convert to UK terminology please look at my Stitch Index.

Today’s abbreviations are:
bl – back loop
ch-2-sp – chain 2 space
dc – double crochet
dec – decrease
inc – increase
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
st(s) – stitch(es)

It is advisable to read the directions before starting, just so you have an overview of what’s happening.

For the stems
Begin by making a magic ring with light grey yarn.
Round 1
6 sc into the magic ring, slst round closed, pull ring closed (6 sts).
Round 2
Sc-inc in next st, 1dc-inc in the next two sts, 1 sc inc in the next st, 1 dc-inc in the next two sts (12 sts).
Round 3
1 sc in the next st, ch2, sk 8 sts, 1 sc in the next five sts (6 sts).
Round 4
1 sc in the next st, 2 sc around the ch-2-sp, 1 sc in the next five sts (8 sts).
Round 5
Dec x 4 (4 sts).
Round 6
1 sc in the next four sts (4 sts).
Cut the yarn with a long tail and use your needle to move it to the inside of the stem.
Attach the light grey yarn to the next unused st of Round 2 with a slst.

Round 3
1 sc in the next eight sts, ch2 (8 sts).
Round 4
1 sc in each of the next eight sts, 2 sc around the ch-2-sp (10 sts).
At this point you want to stuff the stem quite firmly.
Use the back of your crochet hook, or a pencil to pack the stuffing in tightly.
Round 5
Dec x 1, 1 sc in the next eight sts (9 sts).
Round 6
Dec x 1, 1 sc in the next seven sts (8 sts).
Round 7
Dec x 1, 1 sc in the next six sts (7 sts).
Round 8
Dec x 1, 1 sc in the next five sts (6 sts).
Round 9
Dec x 1, 1 sc in the next four sts (5 sts).
Cut the yarn with a long tail thread the end onto your needle and move the yarn to the inside. Use the yarn end to  sew up the gap between the two stems.

For the small cap
Make a magic ring with dark brown yarn.
Round 1
Ch3, 11 dc, close the ring, finish the round with an invisible join as follows:
Leave the hook in the loop made by the last stitch. Cut the yarn with enough length. Now pull the loop which is on the hook up by moving the hook away from the work. This will pull the yarn end out of the stitch. Don’t worry the work will not unravel!
Thread the yarn end onto the tapestry needle. Insert the needle through the first stitch of the round, from the front of the stitch to the back. Finally, insert the needle between the two loops of the last stitch made. You should now have something that looks like a proper crochet stitch.
To attach the cap to the shorter
stem weave the yarn end into the centre of the cap, on the wrong side, then use the whip stitch to sew the cap to the stem. Weave the end in on the bottom of the stem.

For the big cap
Make a magic ring with dark brown yarn.
Round 1
5 sc into the magic ring, slst round closed, close the ring (5 sts).
Round 2
Ch3, dc in the same st as the slst, dc-inc x 4, slst round closed ( 10 sts).
(Ch3, dc-inc) x 5, finish the round with an invisible join as described above.
To attach the cap to the taller stem weave the yarn end into the centre of the cap, on the wrong side, then use the whip stitch to sew the cap to the stem. Weave the end in on the bottom of the stem.

Well done!
Matt and Milly are complete.
