Door 4: Molly the mouse

Molly and Harry are quite good friends, they are a similar size and worked in a similar manner.

Today you will need light grey and a little bit of black yarn.

Don’t forget your 2mm hook, fibrefill, a tapestry needle and scissors, and, if you battle finding the end of the round, a stitch marker. If you don’t have a stitch marker you can use a paper clip or safety-pin instead.

All the CAL tutorials  are written in US terminology, if you need to convert to UK terminology please look at my Stitch Index.

Today’s abbreviations are:
ch – chain
dec – decrease
hdc – half double crochet
inc – increase
sc – single crochet
st(s) – stitch(es)

It is advisable to read the directions before starting, just so you have an overview of what’s happening.

Before starting cut a short length of black yarn and make a double knot in the centre. This will become Molly’s nose.

Make a magic ring with the light grey yarn.
Round 1
5 sc into the ring, insert the black yarn through the ring, so that the double knot is facing out on the right side of the stitches. Pull ring closed (5 sts)
Round 2
1 sc in each st around (5 sts).
Round 3
Inc in each st around (10 sts)
Round 4
1 sc in each of the next two sts, ( ch2, 2hdc in back bump of bottom ch, ch 2, slst in back bump of same ch), 1 sc in each of the next two sts, ( ch2, 2hdc in back bump of bottom ch, ch 2, slst in back bump of same ch), 1 sc in each of the next 6 sts (10 sc sts).
You’ve just created Molly’s ears.
Round 5
1 sc in each of the next ten sts, making sure that you pin the ears forward so that they pop up and out once the round is complete (10 sts).
Round 6
1 sc in each of the next ten sts (10 sts).
Round 7
1 sc in each of the next ten sts (10 sts).
At this point you want to stuff the body quite firmly.
Use the back of your crochet hook, or a pencil to pack the stuffing in tightly.
Round 8
Dec each st (5 sts).
Cut the yarn with a very long tail and close the opening using the closing method I explained in the Amigurumi basics series.

To make the tail insert your hook through the side of any stitch on the closing round, pull up a loop and chain 8.
Pull the yarn end through the last chain to create a knot and cut the yarn close to the knot.

Thread a length of black yarn onto your needle. Make a double knot at the end.
Insert the yarn on the underside of the body. You may need to use your crochet hook to push the knot to the inside.
Manoeuvre the needle one round in front of the ears. Exit and embroider the first eye across the base of the stitch directly in front of the first ear. Repeat with the other eye.
Carefully weave the yarn end into the body on it’s underside.

Well done!
Say hello to your very own Molly 🙂

Please share her on Instagram with #adventmysterycal2015 so that I can see your creation.

I’ll see you tomorrow to reveal what’s behind door 5.
